Update: Ruperto Lopez Arrested After Fatally Striking Construction Worker in Valley Center

Valley Center, CA – Ruperto Jesus Lopez was arrested after he hit and killed a construction worker and fled the scene Wednesday morning in Valley Center.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened around 6:55 a.m. on Cool Valley Road, east of Cole Grade Road.

Authorities said a construction flagman, only identified as a 37-year-old Fallbrook man, was directing traffic in the area when Lopez, who was driving a tan Toyota Corolla, hit him.

Lopez did not stop after the collision but fled the scene.

CHP officers, firefighters, and paramedics responded to the scene.

The victim was airlifted to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

CHP – Oceanside officers on Thursday around 4:30 p.m. located Lopez and arrested him. Lopez was booked into the Vista Detention Facility. He faces multiple charges relating to the accident, including felony hit-and-run.
